The 'Last Forbidden Kingdom' — a mystical, desert-like landscape of ancient cave cities, medieval palaces, and preserved Tibetan Buddhist culture.
Upper Mustang is one of the most unique and fascinating regions in all of Nepal. Known as the 'Last Forbidden Kingdom', this restricted area was closed to outsiders until 1992 and retains a remarkably preserved Tibetan Buddhist culture. The landscape is otherworldly — dramatic eroded cliffs, deep canyons, and barren desert-like terrain that sits in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The highlight is the walled city of Lo Manthang, with its ancient palace, monasteries, and a way of life that has changed little in centuries.
